Itchy Scalp and How to Get Relief from It?

Does it often happen to you that you step out of the salon with a blow-dry and shampoo and instead of flaunting your gorgeous mane, you scratch your scalp? It's very common among people to scratch their scalp and complains of an itchy, irritated scalp. It not only feels annoying but is an unhygienic habit. But why do people scratch their scalps? Because of an itchy scalp. And how does it happen?

Several reasons are there for your itchy scalp. One of the most prominent is not washing your hair as frequently as you should. In the tropical monsoon climate of India, you sweat easily. You do not have to work out to sweat, daily activities like cooking, and climbing down the stairs make you sweat. This sweat and dirt build up on your scalp. And like the skin of your face, your hair too needs to be cleaned off the sweat and dirt.

So to have a healthy and gorgeous mane, you need to keep your scalp clean, not just your hair.

Several other reasons keep your scalp irritated. Some of them are discussed below. Most of them are common and many people experience them but do not go for treatment. Reading this article will help you understand the underlying problem.

Reasons that Keep Your Scalp Irritated

Dandruff – Dandruff occurs due to several reasons. These include dehydration, stress, anxiety, and improper diet among the few reasons. Dandruff is very common among everyone during monsoons. Also, a dirty scalp causes dandruff. You will see white flakes on your scalp and sometimes they appear on your tee shirt as well. It makes your scalp itch like crazy. And when you start scratching the scalp, you make the condition worse.

Lice – Lice are tiny bugs that move around your hair that make your scalp itch. During our childhood, we rigorously went through the careful checking of our scalp by our moms or grandmas. Head lice in the initial stage might appear as dandruff. So at first, you should learn to spot them.

Lice are stubborn to treat. There are shampoos available that treat lice. Use tea tree oil regularly. Another very effective method that experts recommend is the combing of wet hair with a fine-toothed comb. If you share your bed with someone, or anyone uses your pillow, they should undergo the treatment at the same time.

Allergy – It often happens that you are allergic to something and you don’t realize it till very late when the condition has worsened. Some people are allergic to food items like prawns, or eggs. Some people get allergies if they spend too much time in the sun or areas with too much dust. Allergies appear as red bumps on different parts of your body as well as on your scalp. You will feel like scratching your scalp or your skin all the time if you get allergies.

How to get relief from an itchy scalp?

  • Firstly, hygiene is the most important. Do not share your towel or comb with anyone. These diseases are infectious and you will soon experience an itchy scalp if you have shared your comb with a person having dandruff or allergies.
  • Secondly, understand what works for your hair and what does not. You may be allergic to a certain product that you are unaware of and persistent use will worsen your condition. Choose your products well. Read the ingredients list before choosing a product. Avoid harmful chemicals. They may give you temporary results but will cause more harm in the long run.
  • Thirdly, change your hair wash schedule. Regular washing cause your hair to be stripped of natural oils. Don’t wash your hair more than twice a week depending on your lifestyle and schedule.

If you are suffering from an itchy scalp, it is time for self-examination to find out the underlying reason. Many over-the-counter medications will help you solve the problem of itchy scalp. If nothing helps then you can always seek the help of a dermatologist. Itchy scalp though a minor condition can become a serious problem or indicate some serious hidden issue. So, do not overlook the condition.
